Technics ST-9038
The Technics ST-9038 is a high-end FM stereo tuner from the late 1970s. It is part of Technics' renowned 9000 Professional Series.
The front end uses five varicap diodes for electronic tuning. The IF stage incorporates one proprietary Technics 10.7MHz SAW filter and two conventional 10.7MHz ceramic filters. An AN278 IC is used in the IF amplifier stage, while the FM discriminator is built around the AN377. An AN363 handles stereo decoding, and a µPC4558 serves as the audio-frequency amplifier.
The ST-9038 has a slim yet very heavy chassis. The tuner itself provides basic FM frequency-synthesizer functions, while the additional Technics SH-9038 unit adds station memory and timer functions.
Station reception and soundstage are exceptional. The only drawback is that the tuner boards are difficult to access for servicing.
